Stats & Key Messages

The “Stats & Key Messages” are a compilation of facts, statistics, key messages and case studies on reproductive health in displaced and conflict-affected settings in order to provide the media, actors in the humanitarian sector, practitioners from intersecting fields and other interested parties with easily understood, factual information.

Topics

The RHRC Consortium is particularly concerned with the reproductive health needs of the population in the early days of an emergency situation. The Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) sets the standard for what activities and supplies must be present at this critical time to reduce morbidity and mortality as well as lay the groundwork for comprehensive services in the future. The Consortium also focuses on the reproductive health of adolescents, an often neglected and underserved population. Finally, the Consortium is convinced that emergency contraception is a key element in reducing unplanned pregnancies in crisis situations.

Information

Each section begins with key messages, which provide the most significant points on each issue in a concise and efficient manner. Key messages are followed by a brief overview, which presents background information and an introduction to the issue. In addition, facts including global statistics as well as research results on refugee and internally displaced populations are offered along with relevant references. Finally, case studies are available that offer a personal look at the impact that reproductive health services (or the lack thereof) have on the lives of refugees and internally displaced people

Urgency

The RHRC Consortium hopes that the Facts & Stats will provide the media, our colleagues in the humanitarian sector, practitioners from intersecting fields and other interested parties with valuable, easily understood and factual information that will be helpful to their work. It is imperative that the challenges faced by refugee and internally displaced populations are widely understood in order to advocate for improving their reproductive health status. Reproductive health is a right that does not disappear once a border is crossed or a home is abandoned due to fear of persecution, oppression or conflict. It is a basic need and we must ensure that refugee and displaced women, children and men worldwide have access to quality and comprehensive reproductive health education and services.
