  • Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Toolkit for Humanitarian Settings
Source: Save the Children/UNFPA, September 2009
This toolkit was developed to help humanitarian program managers and healthcare providers meet the sexual and reproductive health needs of adolescents when an emergency strikes. Young people represent a large portion of the populations affected by crises but humanitarian workers generally have no prior experience or training in ASRH. This toolkit was therefore developed, as a companion to the Inter-Agency Field Manual on Reproductive Health in Refugee Settings, to ensure that service providers and program managers have the right resources to make programs acceptable, accessible and appropriate for adolescents in emergency situations. It includes user-friendly tools for assessing adolescent needs, fostering participation with communities and parents, and identifying reproductive health entry points in existing adolescent programs. It also contains tools for service providers to more effectively work with adolescents at the clinic and community level.

  • Guidelines for the Care of Sexually Transmitted Infections in Conflict-affected Settings
Source: Women's Refugee Commission on behalf of the Reproductive Health Response in Conflict Consortium, December 2004
The STI Guidelines aim to raise awareness of the complexities of sexually transmitted infection (STI) care and to highlight the areas where improvements may be possible. The Guidelines will help health coordinators, program managers and technical advisors to take action to combat STIs. While technical components for clinical health workers are included, the Guidelines also provide non-clinical staff with insight into an important public health issue. The Guidelines were developed to show that effective STI care requires investment in technical capacity to design and implement appropriate, technically sound programs. Moreover, the Guidelines demonstrate that effective service delivery must include reliable data, drug management, training and supervision, as well as effective clinic care. Finally, advocacy is highlighted as an essential tool to ensuring that STI control receives the necessary attention in conflict-affected settings. To see the latest technical guidance, please consult the 2010 revised Inter-agency Field Manual on Reproductive Health in Humanitarian Settings.

    Source: International Rescue Committee, 2003

The International Rescue Committee's field manual "Protecting the Future" is a unique addition to the disciplines of both humanitarian assistance and HIV control. It is the first publication that has been designed specifically for health workers who are developing comprehensive programs for HIV among displaced and war-affected populations.

It outlines a practical, step-wise process for the design and implementation of HIV programs. In an easy-to-read style, it begins by outlining how health workers can increase their own team's understanding about HIV and overcome their misconceptions. It describes the various strategies and methods for engaging the community on HIV and conducting a situational analysis.

The final two sections outline a comprehensive approach to the management of HIV, with an emphasis on linking prevention to care and support. The manual also presents a number of tools, technical guidelines, references and resources that make it useful not only for humanitarian workers, but for any health professional working on HIV programs in resource-poor settings.
